good morning, i'm sue hall in the traffic center this morning, slow traffic on the peninsula already. i'll tell you why coming up in just a few minutes. 4:31. i'm terry mcsweeney in for eric thomas. >> and i'm kristen sze. >> the final chapter has been written in space shuttle history space shuttle atlantis made a perfect landing. nick smith is live in the newsroom with this morning's history making touchdown. >> it brings an end to their 30-year program. atlantis landed at kennedy space center and closing out an era in the space program. >> after firing the imagination like no other, it pulls into port for the last time. >> after 135, this was the final

flight and it performed as admirably throughout the 13-day flight. they were on on mission to restock the space station with a year's worth of supplies. it returned safely to florida with four astronauts. it flown 33 missions and this final trip was a bittersweet moment for the close-knit nasa community. >> i think the past crews that have sat down and shared a meal and think about, this is the last time. >> the true homecoming for the space shuttle atlantis. it first soared in 1985 and it aremain kennedy center and put on display. it will be years before an american will be launched from american soil. nasa will now focus on deep

that. >> reporter: before the meeting people had told us they were hoping for a calm and con struckive meeting. here is what they got. people are upset, we are doing our best to make sure that mr. harding didn't do any violence to the community. [ siren ] >> reporter: harding is kenneth hard gt 19-year-old parolee that was shot and killed on saturday. people that are upset about the shooting question whether he was armed, why police shot him so many times and why they were

chasing him for a minor offense of not paying his muni fare. police say when they tried to talk to him he ran and fired over husband shoulder at police. the investigation found gun residue on his hand. looking back at last night's chaotic meeting some leaders say maybe it was too soon, people are too upset to have a discussion about what happened. the police chief promises he will return to the community to talk to people and resolve these issues. amy hollyfield, "abc 7 news." investigators are searching for the cause of a san francisco house fire that for while threatened to take out an entire block of homes. flames shot up through the roof the homes and burned for nearly an hour last night. residents were gone and everyone got out safely but they watched as the fire burned flight goly

close to their homes. they describe the wooden homes as tinder boxes. >> you could go a few blocks. >> neighbors say a couple living on the first floor of the building and a single person on the second floor are musicians are who are out of town. >> crews say it could take up to a month to find the bodies three of hikers that are presumed dead after being swept over a waterfall in yosemite park. one was from turlock and the other was a nursing student from manfeca. third victim is from modesto. they were on church group hiking on the trails. several climbed over to the barricade to take a picture. hikers had warned them to get back from the edge. >> one of the males lost his footing, started to slide down.

the second male tried to rescue him and lost his footing and then the third person the female did and unfortunately it was a chain reaction of events and all three were swept over bernal falls. >> the water is higher than usual for july because of the heavy snow pack. usf plans to install seat belts after on a person died in an accident. one was thrown from a shuttle bus when it collided with a big rig thursday. flee other passengers wound up in the hospital. usf hopes to have belts installed in the entire flight by the end of next month. a memorial service will be held today for the person that died. >> ed lee is signaling he may run for mayor after all.

a mock draft urging mayor lee to run for the top stop. he has made comments in the past he does not intend to run but when pressed on the question by the san francisco chronicle, he says part of the accomplishments and he had more on do. he didn't rule out running, the mayor smiled and got into a car. deadline is august 12th. >> an assemblywoman is said to announce he is going to author a bill that no local law can restrict the practice of circumcision. would ma is hoping it to get through the legislative process before the election. opponents have ban the circumcision of a minor in the city of san francisco. >> and mini heat wave. >> it's mini.

>> it's got to be treated as a heat wave. i don't know. what do you think? >> it's going to be about three days in the heat wave and probably so. >> and jet street well to the north, clouds at the coast trying to spell spil into the bay signify neig the sea breeze is trying to establish itself and that is why the coast and parts of the bay shore is going to be toasty. most are in the 50s. you can see the clouds along the coast. 66 at half moon bay. low to mid-70s richmond, oakland. 78 in san mateo to near 80 for rest of the bay shore. mid 90s in the east bay valleys. around the monterey bay we'll see more clouds, 56 in monterey.

few low to mommy 70s in watsonville and salinas. let's take a look at accu-weather seven-day forecast for this thursday and through the rest of the week, today the warmest day, cooling trend hits all neighborhoods tomorrow, not going to be quite as cool as i originally thought sunday and monday but temperatures will be pretty close to below average for all of us starting tomorrow. good morning, sue, how is our traffic starting. >> off to a big stop on the peninsula, earlier accident out of the lanes. it's getting by okay but there is a vehicle facing the wrong way southbound 101 before broadway, burlingame. hopefully that gets out. palo alto we have a structure fire and traffic issues at bay shore and east embarcadero and walnut creek, traffic toward the 24 junction moving at the limit so far so good this morning.

costly loans and falsified documents. david louie explains. >> wells fargo is the first lender to face a penalty by the federal reserve over a list of allegations that it steered potential prime borrowers into costly loans and falsified information as a result of incentives and sales quotas. a group has been critical of wells fargo. >> $85 million is not enough. what we have our community is suffering so much. >> the $85 million penalty is spelled out in an agreement with the fed. the bank do no longer operates the targeted loan unit. they issued a statement that the alleged actions was committed by a relatively small group. it is implementing processes

things like education. >> in washington, d.c., progress remains elusive that has the government sliding toward default. they will vote on a cut, cap plan and democrats are expected to kill the measure. critics say there is larger tax increases than advertised. president obama president obama and john boehner met for 90 minutes and it was unclear whether the negotiations will continue at the white house. a new poll out this morning gives president obama a 7 ep lead against mitt romney. 51% to 44% that is among americans in general. but registered voters, 47-44% for president obama. much of the nation braces for more blistering temperatures. mike was talking about this.

today and tomorrow will be the hottest it's been nationwide since 1950. heat watches and warnings are in affect for more than 30 states. it's expected to feel like 130 degrees in some sierra. in iowa, heat buckled a highway. it caused water main breaks in oklahoma city. temperatures should start cooling down in the midwest over the weekend. cities in the east will still be sweltering into next week. >> 130 degrees, when you were growing up in missouri what is the hottest you remember the heat index? >> about 118, 117. >> how was that? >> if it was great. sitting in the pool doing nothing. five in oakland and san jose. san francisco 5 and fremont 6 degrees cooler than yesterday afternoon. low to mid 90s from danville and dublin. to 92 to 96 in brentwood. east bay shore, low 70s. 72 in richmond but castro valley and fremont, 80 degrees for you. down in the south bay, low 80s around sunnyvale and milpitas to about 90 in los gatos. we'll have mid to upper 70s millbrae, san mateo, menlo park around 80. clouds you can see them along the coast and only low to mid-50s today. near 70 downtown san francisco. sausalito mid-70s and mid-80s in the upper valleys. 66 in monterey today but low to mid-70s for the rest of your bay neighbors. low to mid 90s around the state warmest weather, 109 in palm

springs. mid to upper 90s, chico to sacramento to near 80 in tahoe today. drizzle along the coast. your accu-weather seven-day forecast, the area of high pressure is going to slide off to the west. as it does it opens us to cooler conditions, temperatures will be about 4-6 degrees cooler tomorrow and kind of ping-pong around through the rest of the forecast. >> we're going back to the peninsula. earlier accident has vehicle facing the wrong wearing southbound 101 at burlingame, speeds are at the limit, above but they are trying to get that car out of there. an accident in oakland eastbound 580 just past park boulevard near harrison, left lane crashed into the center divide there. emergency crews approaching on the scene. take a look at live shot in san rafael.

trigger hormone resenteders in children. researchers caution the findings are not conclusive but they could be on to something there. >> new study, a lack of sleep doesn't just make people grumpy but more likely to plot revenge. the study was conducted on college students at the university of arkansas. researches found that when they are sleepy how events could have turned out differently, and there was a tendency to blame others and even seek revenge. the study is believed to be the first to explore how people think when they are tired. next time, don't go to arkansas, come to the morning crew and we will tell you all about being tired. >> yeah. but what about revenge when you are fully awake?
